Sławomir Czarnecki
Sławomir CZARNECKI is a composer, pedagogue, and music life organizer. He holds the position of Full Professor at the Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz (UKW). He was born on July 23, 1949, in Jelenia Góra. Between 1969 and 1974, he studied composition under Piotr Perkowski and Romuald Twardowski at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw (now the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music). In 1980–1981, as a scholarship recipient of the French government, he completed supplementary studies under Olivier Messiaen in Paris.
He is a laureate of numerous awards and distinctions at composition competitions, including:
- 1st Prize at the pedagogical composition competition in Wrocław for Piano Concerto for Youth No. 1 (1973),
- 2nd Prize at the 9th Polish Pianism Festival in Słupsk for Concertino per pianoforte e orchestra (1975),
- 1st Prize at the Young Composers’ Competition of the Polish Composers’ Union for Gradito per orchestra (1976),
- Honorable Mention at the 19th “Premio Città di Trieste” International Competition for Concerto pesante per tuba e orchestra (1978),
- City of Darmstadt Award at the Chopin-Gesellschaft competition for Symphonie concertante per pianoforte e orchestra (1979),
- 1st Prize (twice) at the Warsaw Branch of the Polish Composers’ Union competition: for Intrada, Elegy and Postlude for organ (1982) and Songs of Orpheus (1985).
- Valentino Bucchi Prize in Rome for Forest Wanderings (1985),
- 3rd Prize (1992) and 1st Prize (1997) at the Karol Szymanowski Composition Competition for Music from Zawrat and Hombark – Concerto per violino e archi.
- City of Gdańsk Award for the symphonic poem Hymnus Gedanensis (1986-97).
He has been honored with numerous state decorations, including the Silver Cross of Merit (1996), the Medal of the Commission of National Education (2004), and the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis (2009).
