Maciej Gański

Born in Gdańsk, Maciej Gański graduated with honors from the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk, in the piano class of Prof. Andrzej Artykiewicz. He is also a graduate of the prestigious Solistklasse postgraduate program at the Danish National Academy of Music under Prof. Christina Bjørkøe. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from his alma mater in Gdańsk, where in September 2020, he was appointed Dean of the Instrumental Department. He has honed his skills collaborating with such eminent musical personalities as Philippe Entremont, Eugen Indjic, Andrzej Jasiński, Lee Kum-Sing, Viera Nosina, Ewa Pobłocka, and Bernard Ringeissen.

He is a laureate of numerous international and national competitions, including the Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition in New York (USA), the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship Award in Aarhus (Denmark), the 6th Vila de Capdepera International Piano Competition in Mallorca (Spain), the 3rd International Chopin Competition in Vilnius (Lithuania), and the 8th M.K. Ogiński International Chamber Music Competition in Smorgon (Belarus). He also received awards at the 5th I.J. Paderewski International Piano Competition in Bydgoszcz, the 6th K. Szymanowski International Competition in Łódź, and the 4th J. Brahms International Chamber Music Competition in Gdańsk. At the 41st Polish Pianism Festival in Słupsk, he won the “Young Stage” (Estrada Młodych) title and the award for the best performance of a Karol Szymanowski work. He has received numerous prestigious scholarships, including those from the Danish Government, the Polish Minister of Culture (five times), the “Young Poland” program, the Mayor of Gdańsk (four times), and the Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. He was also honored with the City of Gdańsk Award for Young Creators in the field of Culture.

Despite his young age, Maciej Gański is already a recognized pedagogue. Since 2009, he has been a faculty member at the Piano Department of the Academy of Music in Gdańsk, currently holding the position of Assistant Professor (Adiunkt). He has conducted numerous masterclasses and lectures at music academies and cultural centers worldwide, including Beijing, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Wuhan, Wenzhou, Xuzhou, Hefei, and Odense. He serves as a juror in international piano competitions. His students have won prizes in international and national competitions, and many of his graduates successfully work at music universities and schools.

He has performed hundreds of concerts in Japan, the USA, China, Egypt, France, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Lithuania, Ukraine, Belarus, and many cities across Poland. He has played in prestigious venues such as the Salle Cortot in Paris and the Queen’s Hall in the Black Diamond in Copenhagen. He gave the Polish premiere of Miłosz Magin’s Piano Concerto No. 4, performing it also at the Paris City Hall (L’Hôtel de Ville). As a soloist, he has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Odense Symphony Orchestra (Denmark) and La Camerata Sa Nostra in Palma (Spain). He has participated in dozens of international music festivals and recorded for Polish, Japanese, and Spanish television, as well as Danish radio. His discography includes two CDs. His solo album Liszt Transcriptions was an integral part of his doctoral dissertation and received excellent reviews from luminaries such as Kevin Kenner and Antoni Wit. His exceptionally rich repertoire includes Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Liszt’s transcription of Wagner’s Tannhäuser Overture, both considered among the most challenging works in piano literature.
